What is a true GMT watch?

A true GMT watch, also known as a GMT timepiece, is a type of watch that can display multiple time zones simultaneously. "GMT" stands for Greenwich Mean Time, which is also known as Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). These watches were originally designed for pilots and frequent travelers to keep track of time in different parts of the world.

A GMT watch typically features an additional hand on the watch face, which completes one full rotation every 24 hours. This hand points to the 24-hour markings on the watch, allowing the wearer to track a second time zone in conjunction with the regular hour and minute hands. Some GMT watches also have a rotating bezel or an additional subdial to display the second time zone.

One of the most iconic GMT watches is the Rolex GMT-Master, introduced in the 1950s, which was specifically designed for Pan Am pilots to keep track of two time zones simultaneously. Since then, many watch brands have developed their own versions of GMT watches, offering various functionalities and designs to cater to different preferences and needs.
